Prince Trombonist Michael B. Nelson to Play with LJO

06/03/19

The La Crosse Jazz Orchestra, western Wisconsin’s premier big band, presents its 45th season of free Jazz in the Park concerts in 2019. The band’s first guest artist concert on June 16 features trombone sensation and Prince recording artist Michael B. Nelson.

Nelson will perform several arrangements from the music libraries of Stan Kenton, Gordon Goodwin, Chris Walden and Carl Saunders. Selections include the beautiful “Polka Dots and Moonbeams,” the sizzling Latin tune “So Near Yet So Far,” a lush version of perennial favorite “Emily” and a few more!

Vocalist Tim Henke will be featured on Sinatra’s “For Once in My Life” and Michael Buble’s “It Had Better Be Tonight.” The LJO get down with Oliver Nelson’s “Emancipation  Blues,” the Karyn Quinn bass-centered “Takin’ A Walk,” and the hip hop-flavored “Ummm” with tenor saxophonist Jeff Erickson.

Parts of this concert and many new selections will be reprised at Moon Tunes on Thursday, June 20. Local band Tugg, a fast-rising star of the alternative reggae/ska scene, will share the evening at Moon Tunes.
