LA Saxophonist Tom Luer, High School Jazz All-Stars Join LJO for Jazz in the Park

07/16/19

The La Crosse Jazz Orchestra, western Wisconsin’s premier big band, presents its 45th season of free Jazz in the Park concerts in 2019. The band’s final guest artist concert features Los Angeles saxophonist and recording artist Tom Luer. Some great big band jazz from both coasts highlights this performance.

Tom Luer will perform new and popular selections from his personal library. Tom will feature an exciting arrangement of the Beatles’ “Blackbird” and the ethereal Aaron Lington composition “Translucence.” A world premiere of his composition “Song for Jewel” will be a special treat.

Guest lead trumpeter Brent Turney will be featured on Maynard Ferguson’s version of “Easy to Love.” Jazz at Lincoln Center’s transcription of “Tippin’ on the Q. T.” will give all a taste of early ’40s swing. Jimmy Heath’s minor blues “Big P” will give many band members a chance to stretch out.

Swinging into action at 6:15 p.m., the Coulee Region HS Jazz All-Stars will feature vocalist Elizabeth Caucutt. She will present two selections including perennial favorite “Summertime.”

"Director James Knutson has brought together an outstanding group with members from eight regional high schools," says Greg Balfany, LJO director. "The band is in its 14th year and never fails to impress audiences."
